Frequently Asked Questions
Which TLD extension should I choose?
The domain names consist of a name and an extension, which is called Top Level Domain (TLD). There are TLDs corresponding to country codes or wider regions, consisting of two characters that, usually, stem from the name of the country / region. For example, in Greece the corresponding extension is .GR, in Germany .DE, in the European region .EU etc.
There are also generic TLDs that consist of three or more characters, used by organizations and individuals worldwide. Those TLDs are the most popular. Such extensions are the .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO etc.
So, if you want to associate your site with a specific region, you can select the corresponding local extension. If you wish to use some of the most popular generic TLDs, you can choose:
.COM for commercial or general content sites.
.NET also for general content sites.
.INFO for sites that their content provides information on specific topics.
Extensions that are a combination of local and generic TLDs and require a description of the organization to be registered successfully, the following apply:
.COM.GR can be registered by companies and commercial organizations.
.ORG.GR for non-governmental organizations.
.EDU.GR for educational organizations.
.GOV.GR for governmental organizations.
.NET.GR for internet service providers (ISP).
I bought a domain name. When will it be activated and how do I manage it?
The domain name is registered instantly if you pay by credit card, PayPal or paysafecard.
If you choose to pay via bank deposit, the domain name is not guaranteed with the submission of your order, but only when your payment is confirmed by our Accounting Department.
Once the domain name is activated, the login information is sent to you, and you can manage it through
myTophost Panel. After updating your nameservers, your domain name will be accessible online, within 48 hours.
Can I register a domain name without having a hosting plan?
Registering a domain name does not require a hosting plan.
If you plan to build a website in the future, but you are interested in registering the domain name to ensure that it won't be registered by someone else, you can proceed with the registration.
You can check the availability of the domain name in which you are interested through our Domain Names page.
What is the ID Protect service?
The ID Protect service hides your personal information from WHOis searches conducted by third parties
for the domain name you registered. The service is optional and can be enabled for the extensions
.COM, .NET, .ORG & .INFO. For the .GR domain names the owner information is protected by the law, so you do not have to activate an additional service.
Is there a time limit for renewing my domain name?
All .GR domain names can be renewed 1 year after the first registration date or the date of renewal.
Τhe .COM, .INFO, .NET, .ORG domain names can be renewed 60 days after the first registration. The total registration period cannot
exceed 10 years.
For the .EU domain names there is no time limit to the period of renewal.
Which characters can I use when registering a domain name?
A .GR domain name should consist of 3-63 characters that are alphabetic, numeric or hyphens (-).
Latin names can consist of characters of the english alphabet, numeric characters and you can use the hyphen "- " symbol to separate words. There is no distinction between upper and lower case characters.
